A new boutique hotel is taking over a historic downtown building.
The Pendry Cincinnati is converting the 1913 Beaux-Arts Gwynne Building at Sixth and Main streets — formerly home to ground-floor Richter & Phillips Jewelers, now located across the street, and once used as Procter & Gamble's global headquarters — into a 168-room hotel, slated to open in 2023.
The Ohio Services Development Agency awarded Pendry Hotels & Resorts and NuovoRE a $5 million Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit for the project.
According to a press release, the aim is to "preserve the unique history of the building while also providing an array of new offerings and opportunities for the Cincinnati community."
“We are incredibly proud to bring the Pendry brand to the city of Cincinnati, and to work with our partners to revitalize this incredible building,” said Alan J. Fuerstman, the founder, chairman and CEO of Montage International, Pendry's parent company, in a release. “Like the historic renovations that made way for our Sagamore Pendry Baltimore and Pendry Chicago properties, the refurbishment of the Gwynne Building as Pendry Cincinnati will allow us to contribute to the well-being of the Cincinnati community and bring travelers in to discover a piece of its history."
Upon completion of the hotel, there will be an estimated 168 guestrooms and suites along with four different lounge, restaurant and bar options, including a cafe and beer garden on the roof. The release says the company will be taking design cues from the Beaux-Arts history of the building, utilizing warm woods and natural stone.
In addition to spaces to eat, drink and sleep, Pendry Cincinnati will have meeting and event spaces, a ballroom, a Peleton-focused fitness center and a spa. Spa Pendry Cincinnati "will draw inspiration from the Seven Hills of Cincinnati, and its lineage and ties to Rome," says the release.
