On Saturday, July 27, you'll have the chance to see some epic downhill racing as adults careen down 12th Street on modified Big Wheels. You can even throw water balloons at them if you want.

Danger Wheel, a.k.a. the annual “downhill Big Wheel race for adults,” returns to Pendleton with crash-course racing and plenty of food and brews. The racing tournament, now in its ninth year, will feature 64 pre-registered teams of three facing off for the coveted title of "Danger Champion." Dayton-based Huffy Bicycles will once again provide the iconic Green Machine for racers.

“After unleashing one of Huffy’s latest Green Machine models at Danger Wheel last year, we’re excited to be back in Pendleton, going full throttle with another fun surprise that is sure to electrify racers and spectators of all ages,” Kris Parlett, vice president of brand and DTC marketing at United Wheels, the parent company of Huffy Bicycles, said in a press release.

If you would like to take part in the tournament, registration is open from now until July 20.

The event is open to the public and free to attend. You can watch as the teams — from families to fire departments — zip down 12th Street and soar over jumps, dodge water balloons thrown by spectators and crash into hay bales. Street Pops, Pendalo Wingery, Lucius Q and Hart & Cru will be providing food. Local craft breweries, including Braxton Brewing, MadTree, Rhinegeist and Fifty West, will bring the beer.

The event is organized each year by Pendleton residents and money raised will go toward the beautification of the neighborhood.

Danger Wheel is happening at the intersection of 12th and Broadway from noon to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27. If you’re attending as a spectator, you're encouraged to bring a portable chair to comfortably watch all the action.
