Great Parks, Hamilton County’s parks system, is celebrating the completion of a new playground with a grand opening ceremony.

The $3-million Sharon Centre Outdoor Playground is a 10,000 square foot destination playground featuring designs inspired by the park’s unique surroundings and nearby creek, including bird nest-shaped play structures, a crayfish-inspired climber, dragonfly wobble boards and more. Great Parks CEO Todd Palmeter says the playground is part of the organization’s continuing effort to create outstanding experiences for parkgoers.

“Children and families will enjoy hours of fun at this playground, and with its incredible nature-based details and wide-open spaces, it will attract more people to Sharon Woods throughout the region,” Palmeter said in a press release. “We are grateful for the public’s support of this project, who asked for it in our master plan, approved funding for it and worked with us on a design that will create adventures and memories for children of all ages and abilities.”

Before building the playground, Great Parks said it conducted a survey and workshops to gather public feedback, which led to the design reflecting local wildlife, as well as the rocks and flowing water of Sharon Creek Gorge. The playground is accessible for children of a wide range of abilities and is located next to the Sharon Centre, providing access to restrooms and parking.

The grand opening ceremony will be at the new playground on Thursday, Sept. 12 starting at 10 a.m. There will be free snow cones and refreshments, encounters with animal ambassadors and games for children and guests of all ages.

The destination playground is part of a series of major projects Great Parks is undertaking. You can learn more about them here.
