Miami University will be represented at the 2024 Olympics in Paris as a recent grad takes to the water and a new coach assists the Cape Verde diving team.

Nicole Maier will compete as part of Germany's 4x200-meter freestyle relay swim team. Maier is a native of Bottrop, Germany, who graduated from Miami this past spring with a degree in professional writing.

While at Miami, Maier earned honorable mention All-American in the 400 individual medley twice; the the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America named her second-team All-American twice and awarded her CSCAA Scholar All-American honors four times; and she was a four-time All-MAC First Team honoree. She also was a four-time academic All-MAC honoree, an academic all-district selection in 2023 and 2024 and earned MAC Freshman Swimmer of the Year in 2021 and MAC Co-Women’s Outstanding Swimmer of the Year in 2023.

“Nicole had a remarkable career at Miami and personified our mission to graduate champions with her success in the pool and in the classroom,” David Sayler, Miami’s Director of Athletics, said in a press release. “We are proud of what Nicole accomplished as a RedHawk, and we are extremely excited to see her represent Germany as part of the 2024 Olympic Games.”

The German relay team will compete in preliminaries at 5 a.m. (ET) on Thursday, Aug. 1. Finals will be the same day at 3:49 p.m. (ET).

Miami’s new head swimming and diving coach Samantha Pitter will also be in Paris to work as an assistant coach for the Cape Verde team. Prior to being named head coach at Miami earlier in July, Pitter, who has 16 years of college coaching experience, served as the associate head coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

“It is outstanding to see Miami represented during the summer Olympics,” Sayler added. “Not only do we look forward to seeing Nicole and coach Pitter on this global stage, but we are also enthusiastic about what the future holds for Miami swimming and diving. With a wealth of experience at both the collegiate, national and international levels, coach Pitter’s leadership will help us build on the program’s strong tradition and foundation of success.”

The 2024 Olympics kicks off with an opening ceremony Friday, July 26 and wraps Sunday, Aug. 11.
