Cincinnati’s Cindependent Film Festival returns this September, and organizers have just announced the official selections.

The film festival is put on by the nonprofit CIFF, whose mission is to promote independent filmmaking in Cincinnati by bringing professional resources to and creating a community for filmmakers. This year’s festival will feature 86 films — including 84 shorts and two feature-length films — across three days.

The official selection announcement came Saturday during CIFF’s Cindependence Day pool party for filmmakers, fans and friends. Organizers said they took film submissions for the first 215 days of 2024 and received 220 hours of film from more than a dozen countries. The selected 86 films only make up 16 hours of the 220 hours worth of submissions, and genres range from comedies and dramas to music videos, documentaries, experimental films, an animated short about a mime going through a breakup at a diner and more.

Of the selected filmmakers, 22 are from Cincinnati. More than a third are directed by persons of color and more than a third are directed by women. You can see the full lineup here.

The Cindependent Film Festival will also host live readings of 25 scripts over two days, master classes, deep-dive conversations, a cinema expo, champagne red-carpet events, afterparties and more.

The film festival runs Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 19-21 at Memorial Hall in Over-the-Rhine. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought here.
