ArtWorks has launched its nonpartisan “Get Out the Vote” mural project in collaboration with arts organizations across the state and Shepard Fairey, a renowned street artist, to create a large-scale mural in Cincinnati.
The project, due to Ohio’s importance in the 2024 election, aims to kindle voter enthusiasm and drive overall voter participation. In addition to the large mural, dozens of smaller-scale murals will be featured throughout Cincinnati and Columbus in September, as well as “Get Out the Vote” yard signs designed by several local artists.
For the yard sign project, ArtWorks is collaborating with several local organizations including ArtsWave, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, as well as statewide partners CreativeOhio, the Greater Columbus Art School and ArtsVote Ohio, with many of these organizations also serving as voter registration locations throughout the month of September.
The “Get Out the Vote” yard signs will be free to Ohio residents and a full list of locations where you can pick up the yard signs will be posted on ArtWorks’ website in mid-September.
The movement builds on a previous project done by ArtWorks in 2020, “Hear Me Out,” organized and designed by young artists to inspire young people in Ohio to exercise their right to vote.
“It’s an important moment in American politics, and it’s a moment to bring a get-out-the-vote message to the streets,” Fairey said in a press release.
Fairey, a pioneering force in public art, will work on the mural with a team of local artists and apprentices. The piece will be installed from Sept. 15-21, and will be located in Over-the-Rhine — Fairey’s first piece in Ohio.
