Spill It
Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings
By Mike Breen

The entire schedule for the MidPoint Music Festival (coming up Sept. 25-27) has been posted at mpmf.com. One of the latest additions is to the Southgate House's parlour, which will host a local label showcase with artists from Phratry and Tiberius Records. This Friday, MidPoint season officially starts with a big party on Fountain Square in conjunction with the Guinness Oyster Fest and woxy.com. The free event kicks off at 4:45 p.m. and will feature music from MidPoint participants 500 Miles to Memphis, Dan Mecher, The Harlequins, Peter Adams, Eclipse and Nashville Indie Pop band The Features. T-shirts and other MPMF schwag will be available for the first time, and you can also pick up your MidPoint wristbands. And be sure to grab next week's CityBeat for our annual guide to MidPoint, with info on all of the artists performing.

· Internationally acclaimed local Folk duo Wild Carrot is releasing its latest CD, I've Heard That Song Before, Sunday as a part of the Leo Coffeehouse series presented by the Queen City Balladeers at Norwood's Zion United Church of Christ. The band's core (Pamela Temple and Spencer Funk) will be joined by local friends like Ricky Nye, Sharon Udoh and their regular backing group, The Roots Band, for this performance. The CD puts the spotlight on the early Jazz and Swing standards that have worked their way into band's sets over the years. Funk and Temple recorded the album in New York City and were joined by an A-list of session players, including pianist Hank Ross. For more on the band and the release, go to wildcarrot.net.

· Also back with a new CD is Cincinnati's finest Gypsy Jazz outfit, Faux Frenchmen. The quartet presents a CD release party for the new disc, titled Oblivion, Friday at Molly Malone's in Covington. The CD is said to be a mix of original compositions and more Jazz and Pop standards given a Faux makeover. (fauxfrenchmen.com)

· If you're a fan of "circuit-bent" music -- achieved by experimenting with electronic devices (from toys to synths) to create "unexpected" tones -- you're in the right city this week. "Circuitastrophe" is a week-long series of events featuring a wide-array of circuit-benders, as well as workshops and other informational programs. Shake It Records will host a Circuitastrophe "primer" Wednesday, with exhibitions from thejunkyardcatalyst and Mark 1/2 Mang. On Thursday and Friday, the Art Damage Lodge in Northside will host numerous performances, starting at 7 p.m. each evening. For the full run-down of events, go to myspace.com/circuitastrophe.

· Local magazine Metal Farm, which covers everything from Hot Rod culture to Cowpunk, Hellbilly and Rock & Roll music, will have a release party at Shake It Records Saturday at 7 p.m. The striking mag -- which features Hank Williams III on the cover (as part of its "Reinstate Hank" campaign to get Hank Williams Sr. reinstated into the Grand Ol' Opry) -- is a graphic designer's wet dream, with engaging visuals and photography. Locals the Kentucky Struts are also featured in the magazine's current issue; that band, along with Straw Boss, performs at Saturday's celebration. (metalfarm.com)
