The reopening of Maribelle’s could not
come any sooner. I was eager to see the old recipes I once gushed over
with friends as well as what the old tavern would look like juxtaposed
with the cavalier Boca across the street.

“Lost in the Supermarket” has been on
hiatus for a few months. For the column,
I mostly play the “food rube,” searching the aisles of average
neighborhood grocery stores for “everyday” items that strike me (and
maybe you) as “weird” or “gross.” I investigate the food item and taste
it so you don’t have to.

When David and Liz Cook of
Daveed’s at 934 decided this year to try a new concept in Loveland,
Daveed’s Next, the Mount Adams space Daveed’s
had occupied at 934 Hatch St. was not vacant long. Mantra on the Hill
opened in late May, lead by Chef Yajan Upadhyaya, originally chef/owner
of Cumin in Hyde Park.

There are plenty of restaurants downtown, but for the World Choir Games, the city has set up a Market Garden at the corner of Fifth and Race streets to provide additional options that are fast and affordable. It’s a great “Taste of Cincinnati” opportunity — without the crowds and long lines.Eats include local food trucks and Cincinnati’s own Mecklenburg Gardens, A Taste of Julia, sweets from Graeter's and Queen City Cookies (yay!) and more. There are also local gift and souvenir stands. They did a great job selecting vendors for this, so be sure to enjoy it during the Choir Games.

The hills — around here, anyway — are
alive with the sound of music! Everyone is singing this week in honor of
the World Choir Games, which, you’ve got to admit, have actually become
the Very Cool Thing that our civic leaders were predicting. It’s nice
to see the city filled with people, arriving from all over the globe,
enjoying Cincinnati and all it has to offer. I suspect that a choir, like an army,
travels on its stomach. These singers are going to need sustenance!

Summer doesn’t officially begin until June
20, but it’s Memorial Day weekend and Cincy’s signature mugginess is in full
effect — the season is upon us! Stay hydrated, slap on the sunscreen and get
ready to make the most of this three-day weekend.
It’s tradition to fire up the grill and open
pools at the start of summer, but the biggest local ritual this time of year
is the Taste of Cincinnati, taking over downtown Saturday-Monday. Fifth Street
will fill with local food vendors, plenty of booze stations, carnival rides, four performance stages and more. This year is the debut of food trucks at the Taste — be sure to stop by Café de Wheels, Pizza Bomba, Taco Azul and Queen
City Cookies’ mobile eateries in addition to the traditional Taste staples. Pick

Vine celebrates its fifth anniversary. P+V
is a hub for local goods, vegan food, eco-cooking/gardening/living classes and

Cincinnatians to kombucha keg parties, bike-friendly culture and even tasty vegan
cheese (seriously, it exists). Stop by the shop from 6-11 p.m. tonight and
enjoy a street market with local environmental organizations, food and produce
vendors. Inside, there will be music, a Flashbox photo booth, beverages and the

As bike month comes to a close, celebrate
the way countless teens end their high school careers — with a prom!
Saturday the City of Cincinnati Bike Program hosts a Bike Prom ride from Northside’s
Hoffner Park to Fountain Square (and back), kicking off at 4:30 p.m. Dress in
your snazziest bike-friendly formal wear, get your photo taken prom-style under
a balloon arch and even vote for a king and queen. After the ride, head to
Mayday in Northside for after-prom: Mobo Bicycle Cooperative’s annual
fundraiser. Dance to classic prom tunes, participate in a busted bike
build-off, sign up for a silent auction and enjoy delicious Mayday drinks-n-'dogs all night long. The ride is free, after-prom admission is $10.
Exhale Dance Tribe presents its
season closer Saturday with Imprint.
The contemporary Jazz show features original choreography by Exhale founders Missy Lay Zimmer and Andrew Hubbard. Dancing With the
Stars champ and 98 Degrees alum Drew Lachey hosts the evening. Check out Lea
Lachey, Sherene Schostak and Traci Swain, a father-son live art performance,
solo by Andrew Hubbard and much more. The show begins at 8 p.m. Saturday;

with all the comforts and amenities of a brick-and-mortar restaurant.

The grilled cheese-n-tomato soup gods at Tom + Chee are no strangers to the spotlight. Since its inception in 2009 as a food tent on Fountain Square, the comfort food joint has gone on to expand to two permanent locations and has been featured on Man vs. Food Nation and Amazing Eats. They even boast a food challenge called The Baker's Dozen: a mad dash to consume a tray full of their famous grilled cheese donuts. So what's next for Tom + Chee? A reality show, apparently.The restaurant has been teasing the idea via social media and today released a video previewing the show:Sure, it's a little cheesy (but what else would you expect from a restaurant with the diary ingredient in its name?) and lacking in the production/sound department, but I'm admittedly an automatic fan of all things T+C. It's a great message to share — small-time businesses really can become successful even in a crappy economy. And with fun characters like Andre, it certainly won't be a boring show. Speaking of, did we just discover Golden Voice 2.0? Entertainment Tonight, are you watching?Keep your eyes peeled for more Tom + Chee updates, and keep your belly filled with their delicious creations.
