Frank Leonhartsberger used to scream in his sleep. I knew this from my mother, who lived with him for a while. Born in Allentown, Pa., to immigrant parents, his father died when he was 3 years old. His mother took him back to her family home in Austria, just in time for the Anschluss, the takeover by Nazi Germany.

Nov. 4 can't get here soon enough. I'm writing this column before the second McCain-Obama presidential debate, exactly four weeks until Election Day. I can't wait for it all to be over and for Barack Obama officially to be president-elect.

No surprise, but journalism ain't what it used to be, and we're paying the price for it. Maybe you don't care, don't think you should or wonder why it even matters. Thanks to the general apathy of the American public, you're probably right.  

Raising Up Lincoln Heights

Tearing down the Valley Homes would seem like a good way to kick-start struggling Lincoln Heights. Walking among the mostly boarded-up government stock housing built in the 1940s to house workers at the General Electric plant during World War II, it's clear that this place isn't exactly prime Hamilton County real estate.

Chances are, if you went out to see live original music in Cincinnati in the late '80s/early '90s, you've likely seen Jim Antonio on stage. Antonio was one of the best frontmen in town when he led Lizard 99, an Art Punk band in the vein of early Jane's Addiction.
