WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING INSTEAD OF THIS?

Ivan & Alyosha

April 25 • Mayday

It is always a fun endeavor to go to a smaller venue and see a band on the rise, to take in a group that has the potential for bigger and better things. That is the scenario for this week’s concert by Ivan & Alyosha at the Mayday in Northside.

Machine Gun Kelly

April 25 • Bogart's

Hip Hop sensation Richard Colson Baker, better known as Machine Gun Kelly (or MGK), announced his current Lace Up tour in novel fashion; he became his own street team.

Jon Dee Graham

April 23 • Southgate House Revival

Like former bandmate Alejandro Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham has also developed another side, another strength, in the eight solo albums he’s been releasing since 1997’s Escape From Monster Island. He’s a forcefully evocative singer/songwriter whose deeply gruff, soulful voice is reminiscent of Tom Waits.

Chuck Mead and the Grassy Knoll Boys

April 17 • Southgate House Revival

Chuck Mead had a hell of a run with the band BR549 in the 1990s. The AltCountry outfit, named after the phone number Junior Samples would give out as part of a regular skit on that great American TV show Hee Haw, was one of the premier Rockabilly-band-with-a-Punk-edge groups of the day.

Akron/Family

April 17 • MOTR Pub

Everything Akron/Family does is patently fascinating, wildly evocative and compellingly mysterious. The Brooklyn, N.Y., collective assembled more than a decade ago and quickly became a central element of the Williamsburg scene.

Susan Werner

April 13 • Parish Auditorium at Miami University Hamilton

National Public Radio christened Susan Werner with the revered title of “Empress of the Unpredictable,” and the Iowa native/Chicago resident has clearly earned the complimentary sobriquet.

Belle Histoire Singer Featured on 'The Voice'

Vocalist kills it on NBC show but fails to advance to a 'team'

Last night, Jane Smith, singer for the Cincinnati area band Belle Histoire, appeared as a contestant on the NBC singing competition, The Voice. None of the judges "turned around" (the show's sign of approval, but, really, isn't it rude not to look at someone singing for you?), but Smith earned some fans with the appearance.Lyndsey Parker, who covers the show for Yahoo's music blog, was one such fan, writing, "Whyyyyyyy didn't any of the judges spin for this awesome girl? Biggest Voice fail of this season so far, for real. Obviously the judges could not see how adorable Jane was, with her perfect Marlo Thomas hair-flip, sweet Keane-painting eyes, and Zooey 101 style…but surely they must have heard the potential in this Belle Histoire frontwoman's throaty performance of Florence + The Machine's 'You Got The Love.' I don't understand why no one turned, since they'd turned for less impressive singers this season. Of course, the four coaches who rejected Jane then spent 10 minutes annoyingly gushing about how great she was, which only made me wish there was such a thing as a Do-Over Round on The Voice. Le sigh. If only Cee Lo Green hadn't sat out Season 4. I have a feeling Cee Lo would have totally hit his button for Jane."Click here to read more about Smith and her on-the-rise Indie Pop Rock band Belle Histoire, then check out the band's music video for "My Dear," from the group's debut album Dreamers, below. And click here to listen to the first single from Jane's solo project Decker, "Swing," which was released to iTunes today.

My Gold Mask

It comes as no surprise to learn that My Gold Mask’s Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo are fans of giallo, a genre of Italian cinema saturated by garish colors and melodrama galore that was at it

Green Jellÿ

April 13 • Madison Theater

In 1981, 17-year-old Bill Manspeaker and three friends formed the novelty Punk band Green Jellö with the express intent of being the world’s worst band; their name reflected the notion that lime Jell-O was terrible.

Richard Thompson Electric Trio

April 11 • 20th Century Theater

If there is a buzz on the concert circuit this spring, part of it centers on the shows currently being performed by Richard Thompson. The London, U.K.-born musician is a legend in many eyes, with Rolling Stone magazine listing Thompson as one of the “Top 20 Guitarists of All Time.”
