WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING INSTEAD OF THIS?

Since picking up the guitar at age 12, Brian Patrick Carroll has been voted one of the 20 greatest and/or weirdest guitarists by various Rock magazines. If you don't recognize the name, it's because he doesn't use it. And you wouldn't recognize his face because he doesn't show it. That is the mystique of the blistering guitarist known as Buckethead.

When British Psych/Folk/Blues quintet Gomez got started nearly a decade and a half ago, they were all around 18 and the personification of the title of their 2006 singles/B-sides compilation, 'Five Men in a Hut.'

Of Montreal finds itself a decade-long overnight sensation

1 Comment · Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Of Montreal, the non-Canadian, pro-vaudevillian, Ziggy Stardust-esque troupe from Athens, Ga., seemed to have come out of nowhere, even though they released their first album, 'Cherry Peel,' in 1997. But it wasn't until 2005, when the album 'Sunlandic Twins' was released, that Of Montreal began to cause a stir. Previously, their vibrant, synth-driven, flamboyant energy was seemingly fed the glittery residue left by bands long since deemed irrelevant to average music consumers: Queen, David Bowie and Prince.

Todd Rundgren. Just seeing the name stirs the ganglia of any self-respecting music fan, and for good reason. His accomplishments over the past 40-plus years are almost beyond comprehension.

"They knew the lyrics to every song," Jeremy Dawson says. "It was freaking me out. They knew more of the lyrics than I did." Parents are rocking out to Shiny Toy Guns, and their '80s-like sound is bringing in the kids. "Maybe. Kids like what kids like, and normally they don't like what Mom and Dad like."

Singer/songwriter and New York native Ingrid Michaelson is yet another success story tied to the phenomenal rise of MySpace and proof of the new adage that television is the new radio.

Oh My God's triumphant appearance at the MidPoint Music Festival six weeks ago was more than merely a great gig by a renowned Chicago band with a fervent Queen City following. It was a celebration of survival, a transcendent Rock show that tapped into the joie de vive of life itself.

Old Crow Medicine Show

A decade ago, a bunch of geographically distant friends met in the upstate New York Dead haven of Watkins Glen and put together a band that tossed caffeinated versions of Folk, Gospel, Bluegrass and Country into the collection plate and halleleujahed their way into the rootsy revival as Old Crow Medicine Show.
