As someone who has taken part in the local Tea Parties, I would like to respond to Kevin Osborne’s criticisms of the “angry white conservatives” who take part in these events (“Smearing Socialism,” issue of May 6). I might be the wrong man to do so, however, since I’m a Libertarian.

Though I’ve been happy to see a few small ethnic restaurants pop up along McMillan Avenue in Clifton Heights during the past few years, I’ve found it hard to stray from my old favorites like Thai Express and Red Pepper. So I was happy to be assigned to review the quaint and colorful Tea N’ Bowl (211 W. McMillan, 513-421-9111).

After Punk singer Johnny Rotten left the Sex Pistols, he headed another group called Public Image Limited. Among its hits was the song “Rise,” featuring a verse that included the bellowing refrain “Anger is an energy.” It’s true: Anger can be a great motivator for change. But if that’s all a person or a movement has to rely on, without offering any positive message as a counter-balancing force or goal, they’ll ultimately become bitter and self-destruct.

It was supposedly the Duchess of Bedford who first introduced the world to afternoon tea. One of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting, the Duchess was afflicted - so many were back then - with a 'sinking feeling' everyday at 4 o'clock. So she asked her servants to begin sneaking a pot of tea and assorted breads to her room.
