The members of Psych/Soul/Rock trio Heavy
Glow may be getting their mail at a Californian address these days, but
guitarist/vocalist Jared Mullins hails from the North Coast and his
trippy Hard Rock/Blues/Memphis Soul sensibilities are filtered through
his Cleveland, Ohio, roots and experiences.
Apparently, Chris Denney has only been writing songs for
the past four years, but he’s clearly channeling a lifetime of pent up
creative energy in the tunes he’s unleashing with his Nashville quintet,
Denney & the Jets.
Most people have some sort of plans for this
Tuesday. But for those who don’t celebrate Christmas — and, especially,
for those who need a family-gathering escape hatch — MOTR Pub and The
Guitars have an easy (and free!) out.
JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound’s sophomore album, Want More,
might sound like some lost artifact from Otis Redding’s archive, but
the Chicago quartet is young enough to be Redding’s grandchildren and
have only been working their Indie Rock corner of Chicago Soul since
“Soul food blesses your whole body,” says Katrina “Aunt Flora” Mincy. “It uplifts your spirit. Whoever prepares it puts everything in their heart and soul into it.” Aunt Flora, as Katrina prefers to be called, has put her soul into soul food, and after a visit to her daughter’s Court Street restaurant, Flo’s Plate Full of Soul, I’m grateful for Flora’s philosophy.
