Every once in a while it's good to take a breather, a vacation from our various stress-loads. But Jay Farrar, the longtime Son Volt bandleader, doesn't subscribe to this. How can he? Within the last 15 months, he's released two totally diverse record projects and is now engaged in a nationwide solo tour. He's still on the open road and running with it.

If you have a passion for all things, everything is exciting in some small way. Like my grandmother always said, there are no boring things, just boring people. And none of those boring people had anything to do with new album releases from Lyle Lovett, Son Volt's Jay Farrar, Death Cab for Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard, Electric Six and Mike Doughty.

Jay Farrar reformed Son Volt in 2005 and hooked up with Rhino Records to release 'A Retrospective: 1995-2000.' Four solid albums have followed, the latest being 'American Central Dust,' released by Rounder Records last month. The piano-driven "Cocaine and Ashes" makes for a buzzworthy single because it revolves around the rumor that Keith Richard snorted his father's ashes.
