Here's another pound of cautionary proof supporting the theorem that "story is about thoroughness, not shortcuts." Director Robert Shwentke's adaptation of a DC Comics action/comedy graphic novel is nothing but a series of creaky narrative half-steps. The result leaves no cohesive story in which an audience can invest. Grade: D-plus.

Writer/director Sean McGinly served as the Amazing Kreskin's road manager for a brief stint and has converted his experiences into an insider's look at show business that manages to show the business and hold onto a bit of the magic. Featuring pinpoint performances from John Malkovich and Colin Hanks and a story partially set in Cincinnati. Cincinnati World Cinema screens the film April 26-28 at The Redmoor in Mount Lookout. Grade: B.
