Letters acquired by CityBeat show Western & Southern playing hardball with Cincinnati Union Bethel from 2005-09 when CUB was considering selling the building because it needed expensive renovations. The final offer Western & Southern made before entering into a series of lawsuits against the Inn was made in 2009 for $1.8 million, just $50,000 more than its first offer back in 2007. The property in 2011 was valued at $4 million by the Hamilton County auditor.
On May 13, 2013, Western & Southern
announced an agreement with Cincinnati Union Bethel that would sell
the Anna Louise Inn to Western & Southern for $4
million, $1 million more than W&S had turned down back in 2009 and then publicly offered after CUB was awarded federal loans to renovate its historical building. The deal ended years of contentious legal battles between the Fortune 500 company and the women's social services agency.
