The Exotic World of Hunt Slonem

Alexis O'Brien
Museum Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Through June 29., Wednesday June 04 | Free.

American neo-expressionist Hunt Slonem is a big deal in the art world, having permanent collection paintings in the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others. His work is made exotic by its subject matter — birds, butterflies, monkeys, portraits of the famous and celebrated, and saints and siddhas. The man himself, though, is also colorful. Slonem has a personal aviary in which he keeps from 30-100 various bird species in New York.
