In early September, news reports told the tragic tale of 15-year-old Billy Lucas in Indiana, a floppy-haired boy who liked to show horses and lambs at county fairs. After daily torment and harassment from bullies who perceived he was gay, Lucas was so broken, so depressed and felt so alone that he hung himself in his family's barn. "Bullying is out of control," says Patrick Moloughney, co-chairman of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) chapter in Cincinnati.

Some activists believe the struggle for gay rights in Cincinnati has reached a drastic turning point. During Cincinnati's Gay Pride festival in July, Equality Cincinnati launched a "symbolic" Domestic Partner Registry (DPR). Unlike the registries enacted by three other Ohio cities, the local one wouldn't have any official sanction or entail legal rights, and some activists say Equality Cincinnati has thwarted their efforts for a real DPR.

Big changes are on the horizon for this year's LGBT Pride Parade and Festival including new organizers, more events and a change in location. As with many things that evolve, however, the changes bring with them a fair amount of growing pains.

Many people believe that gay and lesbian activism and our fight for GLBT equality began the night of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. But as early as 1895, a group of New York “androgynes” called the Cercle Hermaphrodites united “for defense against the world’s bitter persecution.”
