Events: Violence Against Women National Conference

The day will feature a wide range of workshops like “Creating a Domestic Violence Free Zone” and “Cyberbullying,” along with “Human Trafficking,” “Women and Homelessness” and more. Along with these workshops, facilitated by prominent men and women in the fight against violence, the conference features keynote speaker Charlotte Bunch, an activist, author and organizer in women's and human rights. A performance by MUSE will conclude the day. At Seton High School.

National Poetry Month is coming to an end and after celebrating with weekly poetry readings in its Reading Garden Lounge, the Cincinnati Public Library will wrap things up this week with readings by poets Dana Ward and Michael S. Hennessey. The readings are free and begin at 7 p.m.

Although Americans enjoy making fun of Canadians, it's just for show. We're No. 1 fans of their syrup, 18-year-old drinking age, comedians and bands. Canada's latest up-and-coming musical export is Valleys, a Psychedelic Shoegaze trio from Montreal.

Canada's latest up-and-coming musical export is Valleys, a Psychedelic Shoegaze trio from Montreal. Music and arts blog Brooklyn Vegan places the band's debut album, 'Sometimes Water Kills People,' "somewhere between early '70s Island Records folk and the Saddle Creek scene," and their MySpace page says Valleys sounds like "Mountains of hiss, rivers of song." 9 p.m. Thursday at The Mockbee.

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day Saturday at Sawyer Point with a ton of family-friendly activities and performances. Hands-on activities include a rock climbing wall, a kayak paddle safety pool, ORSANCO's aquarium, a baby animal petting zoo and more. Performances include an environmental puppet show, a children's fashion show featuring eco-styles made with recycled materials, and music from The Turkeys, Wild Carrot and Comet Bluegrass All-Stars.

Crafty Supermarket is back, bigger and better, for a spring show in a new location at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. With 50 craft vendors, delicious food from local restaurants and caterers, a live DJ from PROJECTMILL, do-it-yourself craft activities and more, Crafty Supermarket promises to be a new Cincinnati mainstay. 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Opening Day marks more than the start of the Reds season. It also marks the day when the Tyler Davidson Fountain is activated. Fountain Day gives the "Genius of Water" her own celebration with live music, speeches, food, drink and fireworks. 6 p.m.

The annual Zoo Blooms event celebrates the coming of spring and the gardens with a magnificent explosion of colorful flowers. More than 93,000 tulips and a million daffodils, hyacinths, flowering trees, shrubs and other spring bulbs will bloom in one of only two accredited botanical gardens in Ohio. Red and yellow tulips will bloom first in early April, followed by every color you can imagine in one of the largest tulip displays in the Midwest, dubbed "Tulip Mania."  

Easter: Egg Hunt on Fountain Square

On the day before Easter, Fountain Square turns into a kiddie free-for-all with a giant egg hunt. Children will be divided into three age groups (ages 2-3, 4-6 and 7-9) with staggered starts and let loose on the square to find brightly colored eggs filled with Graeter's chocolate, candy or tickets to the Newport Aquarium and Ride the Ducks.
