Celebrate the "explosive and experimental" return of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Art Academy's Childlaw Gallery with tasty snacks from Mixx Ultra Lounge and Washington Platform. Then head over to Know Theatre's Underground around 9 p.m. for live music and the launch of the 2010 Fringe Nightly News. A $5 suggested donation gets you into both locations for the evening.

The 41st annual Appalachian Festival brings the cultural traditions of Appalachia to Coney Island with down-home crafts, storytellers, traditional dance performances, home-cookin' and live music from bands like Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Calamity Rain, Wild Carrot & The Roots Bands, Rabbit Hash String Band and more. Friday through Sunday at Coney Island.

The first "First Sunday" event of 2010 is titled "Take Mom to OTR" in honor of Mother's Day. Start the day with brunch and coffee at one of the great OTR eateries like Iris Book Cafe, Coffee Emporium, Lavomatic or Senate. Then head to Vine and Main streets for unique shopping at stores like Park and Vine, Mica 12/v and The Little Mahatma or visit the vendor and artist booths at the Street Fair on Main. And wind down with celebrity chef demos at Falling Wall Condos and live music and drinks at Neon's.

Alegria means "jubilation" in Spanish, and the colorful costuming and characters of this baroque ode to the energy of youth (plus the soundtrack's Jazz, Pop, Tango and Klezmer songs) make it a truly joyful Cirque performance. Themed around the passage of time and the transfer of power from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, the characters of 'Alegria' live out their lives on stage. Through May 2 at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
