Cincinnati-Based McDonald's Franchisee Invented Filet-O-Fish

Otherwise, you'd be eating a Hula Burger (cold pineapple and cheese...)

According to an article in LA Weekly, Cincinnati-based McDonald's franchisee Lou Groen invented the Filet-O-Fish sandwich in 1962. Apparently, he was having an issue selling his burgers to our huge Catholic population during Lent.

So he called up McDonald's founder Ray Kroc and explained his dilemma, suggesting they try selling a fish sandwich instead. Kroc said OK, but only if they also tested his invention: the Hula Burger, a slab of grilled pineapple and cheese on a cold bun. Kroc and Groen had a contest to see which would sell better. The fish sandwich won and fast-food fish sandwiches were born to the happiness of pescetarians, Catholics and cows nationwide. Wonder what would have happened if the pineapple burger won?

Where to Find a King Cake

Mardi Gras means it's time for colorful cakes

Cincinnati may be a German town but we certainly get a little Cajun in us around Mardi Gras. 

The Queen City is hosting a plethora of Mardi Gras parties this coming week (you can read about some here), and our local bakeries and restaurants are dishing up some serious New Orleans flavor.

On Sunday, Findlay Market will have a Mardi Gras parade led by Lagniappe, plus live Cajun and Zydeco music all day. There will also be a traditional lowland seafood boil beginning at 12:30 p.m. And on Fat Tuesday (4 p.m. March 4), BrewRiver GastroPub is doing a Louisiana-style crawfish boil with a special Abita tapping (Abita is a New Orleans brewery).

But if you want to host your own party, you'll need some provisions. The centerpiece of any Mardi Gras party is, well, booze. Second would be beads, probably. But then after that, most certainly comes the King Cake.

A King Cake is a round cake, typically made with twisted strands of cinnamon-dough, and sprinkled with super gaudy purple, green and gold sugar. Sometimes there's white icing under the sugar coating, and sometimes people toss Mardi Gras beads on top of the cake for good measure. Generally, there's a little baby figurine hidden inside the cake and whoever finds it gets good luck (unless they choke on it...).

King Cakes are traditionally served during King Cake season, starting with the Epiphany (Jan. 6), which commemorates when the three kings/Magi came to visit baby Jesus, and ending on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent — the six-week Christian practice of self-denial and repentance leading up to Easter. So King Cakes are named as such for baby Jesus, the King, and have a representation of him hidden inside. 

Nowadays, if you're less religious, the cake is a colorful symbol of Mardi Gras and a necessary edible Mardi Gras decoration. And if you're looking to pick one up, these local bakeries have your back:

Ryan Santos of Please to Speak at Next Creative Mornings

Santos discusses the topic of rebellion at the free monthly breakfast lecture series

CreativeMornings, the free monthly breakfast lecture series, offers cities around the world a chance to celebrate their local creative communities and create a space for like-minded individuals to gather and discuss — and have breakfast. CreativeMornings/Cincinnati is one of more than 68 chapters, spread across the globe.


"Every month, we’re challenged to pick a speaker that can address our global theme," CreativeMornings/Cincinnati organizer Jeremy Thobe says via email. "We have a wonderful team of volunteers that are always keeping an eye out for our next speaker, and since we're inherently community driven, we often get suggestions from our friends, colleagues and attendees. Our events are for people like us, so we start by looking for people we find really interesting and build our list from there. We have so many talented people in our community and there’s never a shortage of people we’d love to hear from."

Their next event on Friday, Feb. 28, will feature Ryan Santos of Please. "Those familiar with Ryan know him from Please and his pop-up dinners, which have been a huge success in Cincinnati. But this month, we'll get more of a behind-the-scenes story," Thobe says. "I don’t want to give too much away, but attendees will get to hear the path Ryan has taken to be where he is today and how he challenges himself to stay successful and stay hungry for the future."

The theme for Friday's lecture — the organization's 12th — is "rebel." All CreativeMornings events are free and open to the public and include coffee and breakfast from sponsors. Speakers present for 20 minutes, after which the floor is opened for questions. Past speakers have included Todd Henry of Accidental Creative, Santa Ono from the University of Cincinnati, Chris Glass of Wire & Twine and, most recently, Tommy Rueff of Happen Inc. Each event is filmed, so if there's an event you want to make but can't, you can see past presentations on creativemornings.com

Coffee Scene Unites to Help Injured Barista

Coffee scene continues to raise funds for friend/Red River Gorge fall survivor

In January, Deeper Roots Coffee Roasters held a fundraising event for BLOC Coffee Company manager Rhett Harkins, who fell 60 feet while hiking in Red River Gorge in December. It took 20 men and eight hours to get Harkins out alive. He has since undergone multiple surgeries and is recovering well, but he can't work and his medical bills are mounting. Which is why Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky's speciality coffee shops are rallying around Harkins to raise money to offset his medical costs. 

Deeper Roots' December Latte Art Throwdown fundraiser pulled together 16 baristi from 16 different shops in Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Northern Kentucky. Harkins judged the event, which raised $1,700 to help cover the costs of his ambulance transportation, from his wheelchair.

Now, Justin Carabello, owner of Carabello Coffee of Newport, Ky., has coordinated an effort with six local shops to serve and sell a special roast called “Restore Coffee” that will benefit the Harkins family through the month of February. The roast is a Sumatra Natural Wahana and is available at Collective Espresso, Rohs Street CaféBLOC Coffee Company, Hilltop Cafe, Velocity Bike & Bean, Missio Dei Church and Carabello

“I am amazed at how quick the other shop owners have been willing to jump on board with this idea," Carabello says. "Let's face it, we are all using different roasters in our shops, so, doing this is far from normal. But we all love Rhett, and the idea here is a simple one: Our friend is hurt and we want to do something to help him. This is what communities do, and I believe that the silver lining in all of this is that Rhett’s suffering has helped us all take a step toward unifying this community.”

Local Artist's Cake Portraits Sold Through Anthropologie

Rebecca Weller's acrylic on canvas cakes look good enough to eat

The most common complaint I've been hearing from my friends during this ongoing Polar Vortex is some version of, "All I've been doing is sitting around on the couch eating carbs and getting fat." 

Well, I'm no different, but I think I might have found a delightful, if only temporary alternative to having my cake and NOT having to absorb all of those nasty calories. Rebecca Weller is a local artist who turns out gorgeous paintings of vintage and Chinese figures, but it's her latest works of whimsical, sinfully sweet cakes that naturally caught my eye. 

A graduate of the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Weller was born in Chicago and now resides in Pleasant Ridge. Her cake portraits explore "deeper nuances of color, while focusing on a subject matter that celebrates childhood daydreams of decadent sweet treats in all of us," she writes on her website. 

A collection of her cake portraits has been purchased for resale exclusively through Anthropologie stores. There are six original acrylic on canvas pieces for sale at/ through the Anthropologie store in Savannah, Ga. They can be viewed at rw@rweller.com and purchased through the store.

Today is the start of our beer lovin’ city’s favorite event, Cincinnati Beer Week. Although advertised as “a week,” it’s actually eight days of fun and foamy shenanigans in restaurants, bars and stores all across the Greater Cincinnati area. 


The mission statement behind Cincinnati Beer Week states, “it aims to educate, inspire and celebrate well-crafted beer in a welcoming environment.” And the never ending list of participating venues includes: Jefferson Social, Tap House Grill, Arthur’s Café, Christian Moerlein Brewing Company, Incline Public House, Virgil’s Café, The Oak Tavern, The Famous Neons Unplugged and dozens more. 


Some of the festivities this week include beer sampling, beer paired meals, meet and greet with local brewers and several opportunities to give back, with beer event charities such as Hops Against Cancer, Pints for Parkinson’s, MadTree Sprye Launch Party benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and more.

  • Thursday, Feb. 6: Start Beer Week with the Tapping of the Beer Week Beer, Hostivit, at Coaches Corner (317 E. Sixth St., Newport, Ky.) until 1 a.m. Pair the unique Imperial Pilsner with the Coaches Corner, hand-pattied, Reuben Burger on a toasted Kaiser roll for a delicious beer and burger combo.
  • Friday, Feb. 7: Join Rivertown Brewing Company (607 Shepherd Drive, Unit 6, Lockland) for the Winter Olympic ceremonies kick-off, 5-10 p.m., featuring Winter Ale 1st pint — and you keep the glass. Take a brewery tour at 6 p.m. and see how sharp your mind is after drinking with Winter Olympics trivia at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 8: Attend the Cincinnati Nature Center’s Maple on Tap event. Collaborating with Mt. Carmel Brewing Company, the Nature Center is releasing the first Mapple Doppelbock. Learn about the maple syrup making process, sample syrups and learn how it was used in the brewing process. 3-7 p.m. at the Cincinnati Nature Center, 4949 Tealtown Road, Milford.
  • Sunday, Feb. 9: Head to BrewRiver GastroPub (2062 Riverside Drive, East End) for a Kegs n Eggs breakfast featuring Mt. Carmel Coffee Brown Ale and Maple Doppelbock. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 
  • Monday, Feb. 10: Make your taste buds dance at the Cinnamon Roll Chickow Tapping event. Arthur’s Cafe (3516 Edwards Road, Hyde Park) will host a rare tapping of the Triple Digit Cinnamon Roll Chickow 6 p.m.- 1 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 11: Flipdaddys Brilliant Burgers & Craft Beer (7435 Wooster Pike, Mariemont) is featuring New Belgium Brewery. Come and try a beer from the Lips of Face series, which is exclusively at Flipdaddys. 5-10 p.m.

February Local Beer Events

Two weeks of craft brewing goodness just in time for Valentine's Day

Cincinnatians are swooning this February and no, not over candy hearts, roses and candlelit dinners for two, but for our utmost affection for beer. Cupid struck beer-lovers’ hearts this season, causing us to fall head-over-heels (literally) for craft beer celebrations.

With our rich German brewing history alive in Over-the-Rhine and beyond, it’s no surprise that we’re a recognized beer-drinking city. In 1890, as our drinking claim to fame, Cincinnati was the third-largest beer producer per capita in the U.S. After taking a hit from Prohibition, we have since lost that title, but over the past few years the city has revived its list of growing local micobreweries

One thing we do know for certain is that our fine Cincinnati residents sure can sip, chug and guzzle. The city is embracing its drinking title the first two weeks in February, by celebrating some of the most exciting beer events this year: Cincinnati Beer Week, Cincy Winter Beerfest, Hops Against Cancer. 

So come thirsty, pick straws for designated driver now and let beer warm your heart this winter (in case you get dumped before Valentines day).

Hops Against Cancer

To kick off the beer festivities, Tap House Grill will be serving 20 Cincinnati-brewed craft beers Feb. 2-15. The event will support not only local breweries but a charitable cause as well (and they say drinking too much is a bad thing.) One dollar for every beer sold will go toward The Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research. Starting things off this Sunday, Tap House will host a Super Bowl Party with four styles of chili — Cincinnati style, vegetarian, venison and Tap House Stout — complimentary with each $10 purchase of food or beverages per person. During the dates of Cincinnati Beer Week (Feb. 6-13,) a variety of local brewers will be on hand to talk about their creations.

Cincinnati Beer Week

Cincinnati will unite for one week as our love for beer bonds us together. A variety of bars, restaurants and stores all over the city will participate in Cincinnati Beer Week. For eight consecutive days (because, let’s face it, seven just isn’t enough) select venues will hold special events like beer tasting, beer-pairing dinner and brewery nights. Celebrate well-crafted beer and try this year’s Cincinnati Beer Week feature collaboration beer, Hostivit, brewed at Christian Moerlein’s OTR production facility with 12 other local breweries. Cincy Winter Beerfest

Pace yourselves these coming weeks, because no hangover is going to be worth missing the champion of beer events. As one of the top 10 craft-beer festivals in the nation, Cincy Winter Beerfest is the Holy Grail of beer selections. With more than 350 craft beers, this two-day event packs thousands of beer fanatics, satisfying food, live band performances and good ole’ drinking fun into Duke Energy Center. Cincy Winter Beerfest runs Feb. 14-15; regular, VIP and connoisseur packages available online. Non-drinking tickets are also available and special designated drivers tickets will be sold with an included $5 food and soda voucher (because we reward those who put up with our drunken foolishness while being responsible).
