CityBeat was among Ohio's top media performers recognized Friday night at the 31st Annual Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards, hosted by the Press Club of Cleveland. More than 1,000 entries were received from a variety of daily and non-daily newspapers, radio and television stations and trade and business publications from across the state — the contest was for work published or broadcast in 2008.
CityBeat won two awards in the "Best of Ohio" competition within the competition, which pitted all media against each other regardless of size. Steven Rosen won first place in Best in Ohio: Reviews/Criticism for a selection of his movie reviews. The paper won second place in Best Non-Daily Newspaper in Ohio: Alternatives (Columbus' The Other Paper took first place).
The Cincinnati chapter of Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting free airplane rides for kids ages 8-17 on June 13.
The event is part of the Young Eagles program, which is a national initiative that aims to offer free aviation experience to children. Kids who participate will take a free, introductory flight and will be able to discuss aircraft operation and maintenance with pilots. Participants must arrive early to register and a parent's signature is required.

From an entertainment perspective, it seems that life is back on track in Greater Cincinnati following yesterday's brush with White Death. Doing some quick checking, the key recommended events at the top of our home page appear to be on schedule tonight: Cheech & Chong, Grease, Passion Pit/Cale Parks at Northside Tavern, etc.
Not that you need our help to tell you Greater Cincinnati is shut down by the snow storm, but Hamilton County is under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, meaning you're not allowed out on the roads even if you want to be. So stay home and relax.
CityBeat World Headquarters is closed today. Most (if not all) of the recommended events on our home page are off, but please check with each venue and arts organization before deciding to venture out tonight. I know Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Art Museum and Cincinnati Museum Center are closed.
