CityBeat first mentioned him April 3, long before other media outlets named him as a contender, and now the Hamilton County Republican Party has made it official.
The local GOP has announced it will hold a press conference Monday in Over-the-Rhine, where it will reveal Dr. Brad Wenstrup as its mayoral candidate.
Wenstrup, 50, is an orthopedic surgeon from Columbia Tusculum. He’s never run for political office before but served a 14-month tour of duty in Iraq as an Army surgeon during 2005 and 2006.
Wenstrup was one of three people the Republican Party was considering to back in a mayoral run.
One contender, Patrick Fischer, an attorney and community activist from Pleasant Ridge, took himself out of the running. Wenstrup and Brian Kelly, a Hyde Park attorney, both interviewed with party officials to be considered for the spot, GOP sources said.
Wenstrup’s selection has been essentially finalized for more than a week, sources said, but was only leaked to the press today.
Some cynical political observers suggest the timing might be to distract from the controversy ignited by local GOP Chairman Alex Triantafilou, who posted a photograph of the “Dr. Evil” character from the Austin Powers movies on his blog next to an image of a bald-headed Arlen Specter, taken while he was recovering from cancer treatments. Triantafilou has since taken the photos down, but not before the incident was reported nationally.
