Eddie Murphy has stepped down as the host of the Oscars after his friend Brett Ratner resigned as co-producer of the event. Murphy said in a statement: “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

After the announcement of Murphy’s withdrawal from the Oscars, academy president Tom Sherak said, "I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well." He’d saved us all the embarrassment of having to watch him crack the same jokes he did in Norbit to a live audience, Sherak didn’t add.

Brian Grazer (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind) has replaced Ratner and pundits have tipped him to pick either Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Steve Martin, Jason Bateman or Russell Crowe.

Woody Harrelson has joined Tom Waits, Olga Kurylenko, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken for Martin McDonagh and Colin Farrell’s new project, Seven Psychopaths. McDonagh and Farrell first worked together for In Bruges, the story of two hit men who contemplate life and death while visiting Bruges for an assignment.

Because Hollywood never seems to run out of money (take note, America) someone, somewhere, in their dingy South L.A. apartment is writing a movie based on Asteroids. Yes, like the video game.

The Roots have released a track listing for their upcoming album, Undun. You can see that and a video for “Tip the Scale” here.

Florida prisoner Eric Harris, 34, is filing a lawsuit that claims the serving of soy-laden meals to inmates is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Harris, who is currently serving a life sentence for sexual battery on a child, claims the soy foods “have caused painful gastrointestinal cramping."
