Hip Hop the Vote at Xavier

A trio of Hip Hop superstars are in town today to rally voters to get to the polls tomorrow. Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and P Diddy Puff Daddy Bo Didley Combs (or whatever his name is today) will appear on the Xavier campus today at 3 p.m. (gates open at 2 p.m.). They'll speak on the soccer field next to the O’Connor Sports Center. The threesome are appearing on behalf of the Obama campaign.

Be warned — they will NOT be performing, just spieling. I've been talking about the "shut up and sing" phenomenon lately — I wish the artists would at least "sing" before they preach. I'm curious if Diddy is still harping on the "Vote or Die" slogan that completely failed in 2004. Maybe he's stepped up the threat — "Vote or, Seriously, I Will KILL You."

Tickets are not needed and parking is avaialble at the Cintas Center. More info is here.

Oh fer chrissakes. If you want to see celebrities, then at least have the decency to let them be human beings that care about this country, as well as singers. In 2004, Diddy wasn't saying he was going to MAKE you die if you didn't vote, but that if Bush was reelected, the Iraq war was going to continue and you might just DIE there. And thousands have.

Wha? They're using their celebrity to tell me to vote. I'm just saying — if they wanted to do everything they could, wouldn't more people hear 'the message' if they actually gave a concert, which is why people like them in the first place? I was being sarcastic about Vote or Die. More power to them.
