Poll: Gay Prez Is OK, Barely

Although many voters in Southwest Ohio probably would disagree with its findings, a new poll indicates most Americans would have no problem with a president who is openly gay.

A poll conducted by the 60 Minutes TV show and Vanity Fair magazine found that 50 percent of respondents would be comfortable with supporting an openly gay person to serve as president, while 45 percent are opposed. The question was asked in connection with a poll about the possible repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Also, 55 percent said they would support an openly gay justice serving on the U.S. Supreme Court, and 56 percent said they would support an openly gay U.S. secretary of state.

The poll has a 3 percent margin of error.

Here’s more about the poll.

I'm surprised that number isn't higher. Barry Mr. Conservative Goldwater said, “You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight.” And, “The rights that we have under the Constitution covers anything we want to do, as long as its not harmful. I can't see any way in the world that being a gay can cause damage to somebody else.” It's too bad the religious right has taken over the Republican Party.
