SXSW: You, Y'all Are Awesome

Yesterday, Cincinnati's own You, You’re Awesome performed on WOXY's "Lounge Act" series. WOXY is an independent radio station that began in Cincinnati in the early 1980s and then modified solely to an internet endeavor in 2004. The WOXY folk moved to Austin, Tex., last summer in order to expand their borders along a bigger music highway.

I asked Yusef Quotah of YYA what it meant to be part of a live studio session with the station's Cincinnati natives.

“Being a Cincinnati band and having WOXY help you out is a dream,” Quotah said.

“They’ve been helping us out since we started. It was validating for us as a band and makes us feel good about what we’re doing.”

After the band’s session we walked around Austin’s main streets, passing a plethora of tempting cheap taco joints but settling on the highly recommended diner Magnolia Café. Whatever anyone tells you about the food in Austin is true: It’s effortlessly amazing wherever you go, and you'll gain at least 10 lbs.

Our first night out on the town we headed to a small alehouse called Shakespeare’s Pub. After our first round of beers the bartender said to us, “Oh, you’re from Cincinnati, then you probably know these guys,” referring to The National playing in the background. “We love these guys here.”

It’s one day until the actual SXSW festivities begins, and already buzz about Cincinnati’s music is brewing in Austin’s scene.
