Off to a Bad Start

Before Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was elected to the U.S. Senate last month, he campaigned as a “change” candidate who wouldn’t abide by politics as usual and would better represent constituents’ interests than his Democratic challenger. So, of course, one of his first actions before even being seated is prompted by self-interest.

In an interview Sunday with ABC’s Barbara Walters, Brown said he wants American Idol judge/producer Simon Cowell to give his daughter another chance on the show. Ayla Brown, then 17, was booted as a semi-finalist on the competition show's 2005 season.

"I would love for him to have her on the show again," Brown said, before continuing on about why his daughter deserves another shot.

Granted, Walters asked the senator-elect what he would like to say to Cowell, but Brown shouldn’t have taken the bait. As a newly elected public official and the GOP’s latest savior du jour, Brown should have enough on his plate than addressing frivolous side issues that open him up to criticism. If Ayla Brown were allowed to get an unprecedented do-over, the howls of outrage would be deafening and it would be due solely to the elder Brown’s influence.

Imagine if President Obama had uttered such a statement. Fox News would be abuzz for days.

Keep your eyes on the prize, Mr. Brown.
