CityBeat is urging Cincinnatians to “shop local” this holiday season and support Greater Cincinnati’s economy by supporting locally owned independent businesses. Everyone who pledges to spend at least $100 of their holiday gift purchases to “shop local” will be entered into a drawing for a prize package from participating businesses.

More than 25 independent businesses have signed up for the promotion, representing jewelers (Bortz, Richter & Phillips); food (Athena Foods, The Bonbonerie, Melt, Take the Cake); retail stores (Bromwell’s, Metronation, Park and Vine, Segway, Voltage); health and wellness (Intuitive Touch Massage, Carole Paine Acupuncture); and attractions (Civic Garden Center). Each business is contributing gift certificates to the prize package. Get all the details here.

We've published a multimedia show featuring brief messages from participating businesses about the positive impact on the local economy of consumers spending money at independent stores instead of chain stores. Photos of the business owners are accompanied by a new original song written and performed by local musician Tracy Walker, CityBeat’s advertising coordinator. Read more about Tracy's song here.

The deadline to enter the prize package drawing by making a pledge is 5 p.m. Dec. 17.
