An Ohio KKK chapter has been posting recruitment fliers on cars all across Hillsboro. Unfortunately for the hate group, the residents are really upset about it because even though the population is like 90 percent white doesn’t mean they’re racist assholes. CINCINNATI -2

Dear John

I have seen Boehner’s political rise — from courtside seats in the early days — and I am amazed but not surprised by it because it’s easy to be “impressive” and to be passed up the ranks and into many branches of American politics; it’s a trait politicians share with student/athletes in higher education.

I know that racist people still exist. I know that people who hate gay people still exist. But even if you have those kind of tiny, dark asshole thoughts, at what point are you so comfortable with your surroundings that you assume everyone around you agrees with your limited worldview?

It’s difficult to consider the Cincinnati Bengals to be one of the NFL’s more innovative franchises — aside from winning the most lopsided stadium deal in the history of football and then hiring the guy who negotiated it for the county, the team is really only known for losing Super Bowls to the 49ers and a funny 1990s touchdown dance.

The state of Ohio has to remove 7,200 healthy trees from the area surrounding the East Fork Lake State Park in Bethel because they’re considered “high-risk” from the invasive Asian long-horned beetle, which is basically the Once-ler of the bug world. CINCINNATI -2

For a news junkie, the Internet helps me understand the Middle East where someone always seems ready to make life miserable for someone else.

Gonna Make This House Your Home

If you have ever been past these places at twilight, just as the exterior lights are coming up, the dichotomies of our shadowy citizens “living” near a casino in proximity to two entertainment districts are illuminated as the houses of justice become the beds and toilets for the indigent.

FRIDAY SEPT. 13: Ohio is a great state with a lot of smart people in it, but somehow it seems like the dumbest people in it end up in really important positions. Take Debe Tehrar, the president of the Ohio School Board.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear is moving the state forward with its revisions to statewide science education standards, which will focus more heavily on evolution and climate change, despite opposition from a state legislative committee; some Republicans are worried teaching evolution could result in “the promotion of socialism and resulting genocide and murder.” WORLD +1

There have been some unexpected little silver linings; one, I remembered how and why I live in Over-the-Rhine, and two, I remembered how to live.

THURSDAY SEPT. 5: For being a really old daily newspaper, The Cincinnati Enquirer is not known for being great at many things (although its recent plan to do a better job covering Northern Kentucky by having zero reporters stationed there is a pretty good idea and should pay off in the long run).
