Then: In January 1996, CityBeat explored the largest employer in town -- not Procter & Gamble, the city of Cincinnati or General Electric, but the University of Cincinnati.

The story contained lots of interesting facts and figures surrounding UC. For example, in 1996 there were a total of 34,526 students and a budget of $852 million. (Issue of Jan. 25, 1996)

Now: So how have the numbers changed over the past eight years? Most have remained fairly consistent, with the notable exceptions of tuition rates and alumni living nearby. Fewer staff are serving fewer students in more buildings on an additional 81 acres. Nearly $50 million was cut from the budget compared to '96. Here are the comparisons:
