943 Churchill Ave.

Address: 943 Churchill Ave., Walnut Hills

Owner: Jerome Harwell Jr.

Year Built: 1900

Value: $44,000

Comments: This vacant house is within walking distance of the Progressive Child Academy.

Jerome Harwell Jr. owns this property and a vacant lot next door. Fire damaged the house several years ago, according to Ethel Harwell, his mother. The the roof is falling in and all four sides of the upper wall have fallen off. Trash surrounds the house. The Cincinnati Fire Department says the house poses a high fire hazard and is unfit for habitation. The Department of Building and Inspections sent Jerome Harwell a letter in June, calling the property a public nuisance and setting a hearing. Harwell didn't attend. Al Taylor, a city building inspector, wrote Harwell in October, informing him the city planned to barricade the upper level. Taylor's report says police saw no indication of vandalism or vagrants. Neighbors say the house is an eyesore and dangerous for children. Harwell couldn't be reached for comment.

BLIGHT OF THE WEEK is an effort to highlight the problem of abandoned buildings -- and who's responsible for them.
