Color & Light Therapy

The use of color and light in healing is very old. The healers of ancient Egypt, China, India and Tibet have used color in many of their healing practices. It's widely used today in modern medicine in the form of infrared light treatments and laser treatment. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression brought on by the lack of sunlight in winter months.

Richard Gerber M.D. writes in Vibrational Medicine for the 21st Century, "Quite simply, we absorb and use different components of sunlight through our eyes as well as our skin. The ultraviolet light in sunlight is a critical ingredient in the production of vitamin D by our bodies."

Notice how you feel when you enter a room.

For example, a blue room might feel cold or calm. A red or yellow room might feel warm or stimulating, while a green room might bring about a feeling of peace. The color affects the visual cortex and travels to the limbic system, the nerve center that plays a role in emotion, learning and memory. Some researchers speculate that inadequate stimulation of the limbic system can lead to a buildup of painful emotional experiences in our brain and be the reason for anxiety attacks.

In the ancient form of medicine Ayurveda, color plays a significant role in the well-being of a person. (One form of therapy is to determine the imbalance in a person and have them drink a glass of water every morning from a glass jar in the color of the necessary vibration to bring about balance.) In the more esoteric texts, colors are linked with specific chakras in the body: root chakra, red; sacral chakra, orange; solar plexus, yellow; heart center, green; throat chakra, blue; brow center, indigo; and crown center, violet. ©
