Quasi consists of Sam Coomes (who has played with Elliott Smith and Built to Spill, two mild indicators of the duo's own sound) and Janet Weiss (drummer for Sleater/Kinney), a divorced couple who more than prove they can still make beautiful music together. Sword, the duo's fifth album, follows the band's tradition of making a sound that musically and melodically often exudes joy (save a few intent minor-key musings), though the lyrics are often imposingly downtrodden. But Quasi, like The Beatles did on some of the White Album, makes the artful juxtaposition incredibly soulful and a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
At the Southgate House on Friday.
