Buju Banton

Politically aware and full of songwriting talent, Buju Banton is the quintessential Reggae man.

With much love from the Reggae, R&B and Rock community, Banton is one of modern Reggae's best offerings. His latest release, Unchained Sprit, will be released on Tuesday by Anti Inc., a new subsidiary of Punk label Epitaph. Unchained is soulful and energetic effort, enhanced by sparkling appearances by Rancid, Luciano and Stephen Marley. But it's Banton who runs the show and he does a supreme job of balancing the pop of accessibility with the grit of the street. Banton's Dancehall style stands above the rest because it's not mired in synthetic blips and "baby, baby" lyrics. Expect this to be one of the best-selling Reggae albums of the year and don't be at all surprised if Buju snags a Grammy for Spirit.

At Annie's on Saturday with The Pilfers.

-M.B.
