Great Big Sea

An uproarious, celebratory crew from Newfoundland, Canada, Great Big Sea are an important part of the new Celtic vanguard, taking traditional songs and injecting them with a rockin' dose of adrenaline that is relentless and wildly endearing.

Last year, when CityBeat talked to Paddy Moloney, the leader of The Chieftains, Great Big Sea were the first group he mentioned (and excitedly so) when asked who were the great young practitioners of a genre he greatly advanced. The group's latest release is the aptly titled Rant & Roar (Sire), which shows some of the softer side of the band ("Something To It") but is still undeniably raucous, featuring a reworking of R.E.M.'s "The End of the World (As We Know It)" done as a breakneck sea chantey.

Friday at the Southgate House with John Kinney.
