If you’re tired of going to concerts you really want to hear only to be consistently distracted by people doing myriad things with their cell phones, talking loudly or drunkenly dancing while spilling their drink all over you, the DownTowne Listening Room is a new venue just for you.

East Coast transplant Scott Skeabeck founded the new space in the old Shillito’s building downtown after being unable to find the types of venues he’d grown to love — places where listening to the music was the prime function.

The intimate nonprofit space (proceeds go to the artists) will present touring artists, with local acts opening the shows. Friday’s debut concert features acclaimed Piano Pop singer/songwriter Julian Velard, whose new album, If You Don’t Like It, You Can Leave (an ode to New York City), is due for release June 17. Local singer/songwriter Charlie Millikin opens.

7:30 p.m. Friday. $15 (available in advance through brownpapertickets.com). DownTowne Listening Room, 151 W. Seventh St., Downtown, downtownelisteningroom.com.
