Hang Over Easy (Review)

All day brunch and booze to cure a hangover — or get one

The best course of action when opening a restaurant with the aim of catering to the glassy-eyed, post-party brunch bunch might be to keep it close to a college campus. And Hang Over Easy chose the perfect spot in Corryville, close to the University of Cincinnati and a string of thriving new hot spots on Short Vine. (This is the second location for the restaurant, which originated in Columbus’ University District.) 

On a recent Sunday, my boyfriend and I stopped in to get breakfast for dinner. We were a bit surprised to see almost no patrons inside, despite the fact that it was smack in the middle of dinner time. (I learned on a previous visit, however, that Sunday brunch is shoulder to shoulder and might involve a 45-minute wait. This was my second attempt at reviewing Hang Over Easy, because on my first visit I brought a vegan friend who could eat next to nothing on the menu.)

The space itself is large, with tons of seating, a big bar and several outdoor tables on a somewhat secluded back patio. The interior is more modern-looking than one would expect. With bright white walls and metal accents, it looks fresh and is certainly easy on the eyes. As we sat at a picnic table on the back patio, we perused a two-page menu on a clipboard. It was divided into three main parts: breakfast, burgers and salads.

On my first visit, I zeroed in on the Tipsy Bread Pudding French Toast ($7.99). Thick battered pieces of bread pudding were smothered with macerated berries, whipped cream and bourbon maple syrup. It’s basically a diabetic coma waiting to happen. The dish is a perfectly sloppy mess. It slid right down my throat and soaked up whatever residual alcohol was still churning in my gut from the night before.

On this visit, I wanted to feel a little healthier and lighter and ordered the Hippie Dippie Parfait ($6.99).

While super tasty, this dish would certainly not have been health-conscious-hippie approved. It was alternating layers of macerated berries and vanilla yogurt in a large glass chalice, with just a sprinkling of housemade granola on top. It looked and tasted more like a dessert than breakfast. I also ordered a side of plain rye toast ($2.25), which was a nice rest from the sweetness of the main dish.

My favorite part of the dinner was the side of Fire Slaw ($2.50) — in hindsight, maybe not the best to eat before or after the super sweet yogurt concoction. Crunchy strings of cabbage and red peppers were delicately tossed with the perfect amount of creamy reddish slaw dressing. The initial taste is pretty typical cole slaw, but the kick comes shortly after in just the right measure. It’s the kind of dish one becomes a little possessive of when they see their dining mate’s fork within a 6-inch radius of the bowl.

My boyfriend ordered the Poco Loco Chorizo Skillet ($8.79). It’s a kitchen-sink style dish with a little of everything thrown in. Grilled chicken, chorizo, peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and potatoes — all topped with cheese and two eggs — arrived in a perfectly sized white skillet. The blend was proportionate, not skimping too much on the meat. He said it was pretty heavy and would be sitting in his stomach for a while, which is really the aim of the best hangover foods. There is no sauce or real seasoning involved, and it tastes just how you would imagine it would taste — a hot bowl of relatively simple ingredients. Just the skillet alone is plenty for a meal, but it also comes with a side of toast.

It seems that the most popular dish on the menu — from watching the plates fly out of the kitchen at my previous brunch experience — is the Dirty Sanchez ($7.99). It’s a chorizo burrito with scrambled eggs, potatoes and cheese in a flour tortilla topped with pico de gallo and sour cream. The menu also has several omelets ($7.29 each) to choose from, including an option to make your own.

As you would expect, a little hair of the dog is also encouraged at Hang Over Easy. While I waited for my meal, I sipped a mimosa, which arrived in a stemless flute. It was probably a little heavy on the dry champagne and a little light on the OJ, which means it was perfect and not too sugary. They also have a full bar with a large selection of draft beers and Jameson whiskey on tap.

Aside from being just a brunch spot, Hang Over Easy is also a nighttime spot with bar hours until 2:30 a.m. nightly — so you can get drunk and cure your hangover all in one place.
