Kelly Cogswell's Eating Fire: My Life as a Lesbian Avenger is an evocative, frequently funny glimpse at a provocative movement, a fascinating memoir about lesbian activism that spans more than two decades. Cogswell was a member of the Lesbian Avengers, an influential group that would affect changes large and small — from the streets of New York's East Village to marshaling 20,000 lesbians for a 1993 march on Washington, D.C.

Cogswell writes about that march, which culminates with her and others literally eating fire: "I was supposed to be in charge, but how can you manage a hurricane? A tsunami of twenty-thousand dykes? You don't. You just try to get out front. … When that huge entity started moving, what a roar."
