Idris Elba captures the rugged fighting spirit of Nelson Mandela, a boxing enthusiast as well as one of the few black lawyers in South Africa. But the actor, known to audiences for his breakout role as Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire and currently as the Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall in the Thor franchise, commands our attention now, reminding us of the extraordinary lengths Mandela was willing to go to free not only a people but a nation.
Justin Chadwick’s biopic carefully outlines the early developmental stages of Mandela’s involvement in a movement that pushed and fought back against oppression in order to spotlight the willingness of the global community to rally behind and inevitably celebrate the man who would come to be known as the father of his nation.
