Herman Melville’s legendary 1851 novel of seafaring mysticism and peril might not seem an easy choice for theater, but the legendary Orson Welles reinvented it in 1955 by employing the device of a Shakespearean company rehearsing King Lear. The actors take a break to dig into the story of Captain Ahab’s obsessive search for the Great White Whale — on a bare stage using a lot of invention.

Northern Kentucky University’s theater department opens its fall season with a production offering creative minimalism at the Robert & Rosemary Stauss Theatre, a black-box venue.

Through Oct.

6. $14 adult; $11 senior; $8 student. Northern Kentucky University, Nunn Drive, Highland Heights, Ky., 859-572-5464, nku.edu.
