In case you missed the pink memo plastered on our website for weeks: John Mayer is coming to town.

In the last several years, Mayer has undergone two throat surgeries. The first medically induced silence came at the perfect time for Mayer — just after he stuffed his foot in his mouth after a slew of semi-racist and otherwise eye-roll-worthy comments. The second surgery came with rather ill-fated timing, directly after the release of his most recent album, Born and Raised.

Born and Raised is a departure for Mayer.

The Pop was gone, replaced with a vintage tinge that was helped along by the likes of Crosby and Nash. The overly Hallmark lyrics were released with truly thoughtful and open moments. Seriously — “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” displays some of the best imagery and rhyming sequences to come along from someone outside of Hip Hop in a while.

Mayer’s on the road now, though. He’ll roll into town not only to bring Born and Raised to Cincinnati, but also to help promote his upcoming record, Paradise Valley. The first single, “Paper Doll” isn’t quite up to Born’s standards, but more reminiscent of his debut, Room for Squares.

Hopefully the concert will offer more insight into Paradise Valley. If it’s as good as Born and Raised, will you forgive him of his sins?

JOHN MAYER plays Tuesday, July 9 with Phillip Phillips at Riverbend in Anderson. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here.
