Never before have I fielded as many questions about similar plotlines in movies released in the same year than with the recent two-fer of White House assaults. Sight unseen, it feels like White House Down has the edge in terms of brand recognition, because it directly references the location (rather than relying on the “Olympus” code name).
Plus, Down marks the return of director Roland Emmerich to explosive big-screen apocalyptic mayhem. He’s got Jamie Foxx as the head occupant and leader of the free world paired up with Channing Tatum as a police officer touring the grounds with his daughter when things get hot, so expect this black prez and his protector to dispense with taking names and head straight to some epic butt-kicking. The White House may be down, but not likely out for the count this time. Now in theaters. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review
