The pearly white gates of Pitch Heaven opened up and pooped out the idea for The Heat. Don’t believe me? Where else would the utterly generic notion of matching Sandra Bullock (as a special agent of the FBI) with Melissa McCarthy’s rogue Boston detective come from, if not the magic factory of crazy dreams and schemes? It’s been done before, damned near done to death, but how about one more time and with a couple of funny women? Next time, I kid you not, I’m almost certain the odd buddy couple of cops will be Clint Eastwood and Helen Mirren, but until then, don’t get completely flattened by the broad hijinks on display from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.

Now in theaters. (R) Not screened in time for review
