It is both easy and hard to define the music of We Were Promised Jetpacks. At times Big Beat Rock and other times resembling energetic Euro Alternative Pop, the one thing the Jetpacks are not is minimalist. With guitars relentlessly in barrage mode, though layered and mercifully not too repetitive, the quartet makes full use of its sonic capabilities on its second album, In the Pit of the Stomach
We Were Promised Jetpacks, named after the many predictions made a century ago about life in the post-modern world (aka now), is made up of four pasty white kids from Edinburgh, Scotland: Adam Thompson on guitar and vocals, Mike Palmer on guitar, Sean Smith on bass and Darren Lackie on drums
. The album was recorded in the geothermal climes of Iceland with some mixing and production help from Peter Katis, who has worked with Cincy-bred Indie Rock stars The National. The Jetpacks tend to road test their new compositions before recording them and in turn kick up the songs after the fact. The band’s blatantly energetic music should bounce off of the city canyon walls nicely once it hits the open air on Fountain Square, where We Were Promised Jetpacks headlines this year’s second free MidPoint Indie Summer show (taking place each Friday throughout the summer).
