Victor Wooten is the apex four-stringer, the DaVincian model for the guitar half of a rhythm section; he is the bassist’s bassist.
Wooten is a success in more than mere esoteric terms; the Idaho native has won five Grammys and was named Bass Player of the Year by Bass Player magazine three consecutive years (and was the first to win more than once).
Wooten began playing bass at the improbable age of 2, instructed by his older brother; four years later, he was laying down the pulse for his family outfit, the Wooten Brothers Band
In the mid-90s, Wooten embarked on a solo career, which has resulted in nine recordings, two of them, Words & Tones and Sword & Stone, coming just last year. He’s played countless sessions and done stints in a variety of bands, including Bass Extremes, Vital Tech Tones and SMV, a remarkable bassist summit with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller, among them.
Victor Wooten performs 8 p.m. Friday, April 19 with Grooveshire at Madison Theater in Covington. $20. madisontheateronline.com.
