Saturday is the final ArtsWave and Macy’s Arts Sampler weekend of 2013, and if you’ve never taken advantage of this day of free art events at area institutions and organizations, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. This month’s offerings at various locales are particularly performance based, so use this day as an excuse to visit some new places or ones that maybe deserve another look.
From 11 a.m.-5 p.m., the Taft Museum will offer collage making and performances by Elementz Hip Hop dancers/spoken word artists, as well as Bi-Okoto African Drum and Dance group.
From 11 a.m.-6 p.m., the Contemporary Arts Center will offer programming including screenings of child-friendly animation as well as modern dance, care of MamLuft&Co, along with a performance by the Wabi Sabi Jazz group.
From 1-3 p.m., the Cincinnati Ballet will host several dance performances as well as Chinese Kung Fu demonstrations.
And starting at 6 p.m., Washington Park will wrap up the day with an all-ages Sock Hop dance party featuring the Ensemble Theatre’s Marvelous Wonderettes.
The family-friendly hop encourages costumes (poodle skirts, saddle shoes, cat-eye glasses) and, in fact, the Wonderettes will be judging a costume contest in between singing ’50s-era hits such as “Wishin’ and Hopin’ ” and “Rockin’ Robin.”
