Columbus, Ohio, music veteran Happy Chichester is no stranger to Cincinnati audiences, from his early years as bassist for Royal Crescent Mob (which regularly packed large venues like Bogart’s in the late ’80s/early ’90s) to his work with The Afghan Whigs and Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers to his kick-ass Pop/Rock band Howlin’ Maggie’s many gigs in the area. Now a solo artist, Chichester continues to perform across the States and in Europe to a cultish but dedicated fan-base.

Chichester’s sophomore solo studio effort, the recently released Torchwood Loop, ranks among his best work yet, as he flirts with a variety of styles, which helps give the songs some unique textures and arrangements.

But it’s his songwriting brilliance that makes Torchwood such an addictive listen; highlights include the acoustic rocker and first single “Motorbike,” the slinky “Sexy Girl” and the Electro Rock gem “Glamorous Town.”

Chichester and his band (former Royal Crescent Mob/Howlin’ Maggie drummer Carlton Smith and multi-instrumentalist Derek DiCenzo) come to the Northside Tavern Saturday for a free show promoting the new release. Homemade Drugs and Sun Country open.

4163 Hamilton Ave., Northside, 513-542-3603, happychichester.com.
