The Love List 2013

By Maija Zummo · February 6th, 2013 · Cover Story
Google “What is love?” and Wikipedia will present you with at least nine different songs — including the one from A Night at the Roxbury, which is probably stuck in your head right now, sorry — and an album by the same title. Try to define it on merriam-webster.com and you’ll find it has roots in Old English, Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Germanic and cognates in Old High German and can mean anything from “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” to “affection and tenderness felt by lovers.” And Urban Dictionary suggests that love is “nature’s way of tricking people into reproducing.”

So this Valentine’s Day we’re not going to try to define love, help you find it or tell you where the best two-for-one dinner deals are in the city — although we’re sure there are plenty (including half-price Habanero vouchers on cincinnati.altperks.com for your little burrito #shamelessplug). But CityBeat’s 2013 Love List will introduce you, in a strictly platonic way, to nine “hot” locals in various service, creative and philanthropic industries who have turned their passions into successful careers.

The following pages present portraits of these lovable locals, focusing on why they love what they do, why they love Cincinnati and why they love their lives in general — restating the fact that there are many ways to define love and spread love in this world. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Where there is love, there is life.”
