Playwright Adam Rapp has a pretty bleak outlook on
life, and that plays out in his tale of two buddies who end up in an
Amsterdam apartment and contest over a mysterious young woman who shows
up on their doorstep. Red Light Winter, the next production by
Untethered Theater at Clifton Performance Theatre, was considered for
the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2006, and it’s a showy work in which
Rapp shows off his flair for piercing dialogue.
One of the guys
intellectualizes to the point of paralysis, while the other effortlessly
grabs the social limelight. They’re trying to relive their twenties,
but a beguiling prostitute changes the dynamic of friendship in some
terrifying ways. Director Paul Morris calls it “a love story of missed
opportunities.” It’s the right kind of script for this fledgling theater
company. 8 p.m. Friday-Sunday. $15. Through Feb. 2. Clifton Performance
Theatre, 404 Ludlow Ave., Clifton. 513-939-0599,
